Taylor House Restoration Wins Trio of Preservation Awards
The South Carolina Preservation Awards, Historic Columbia and the South Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects honored USC this year for its restoration of the Taylor House.
About the project: The restoration returned the home — located next to the Joseph F. Rice School of Law — to its former glory while modernizing essential mechanical and life-safety systems.
- Exterior work included reinstalling a terra cotta tile roof, restoring original windows where possible and replacing deteriorated brickwork.
- USC collaborated with Tyler Construction, the BOUDREAUX Group and the Boyd Foundation, which is chaired by a descendent of the Taylor family.
What they’re saying: “To have the opportunity to work with Ms. Boyd, hear her recollections of life in the house and finally return family portraits and original furniture to the house enabled not just the architectural character of the house to be restored but, in a sense, the house has reclaimed its soul.” — Derek Gruner, university architect
