Darnall Boyd, a Columbia businessman and wife, Susan, a descendant of the founders of the City of Columbia, formed the Darnall W. and Susan F. Boyd Foundation, Inc., in 2010. The Foundation is focused on the promotion of projects of specific interest to the Boyd family, including education, beautification, creation of outdoor recreational opportunities, wildlife enhancement, and propagation and enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Columbia and the midlands. The Foundation undertakes its own “signature” projects and generally does NOT provide the ongoing operating expenses of, or support for capital campaigns undertaken by other charitable organizations. The Foundation is integrally involved in all aspects of the projects it underwrites, including project scope, design, contracting, bidding, and construction oversight.
Organization
Major decisions are made by the Boyd Foundation’s Board of Directors. The Board currently consisting of nine Board Members, each of whom bring various skill sets to the Board, including real estate, finance, legal, investments and design. The Board meets quarterly. Day-to-day operating of the Foundation are divided between the President and Executive Director. The President vets all proposed projects and closely monitors each project the Foundation underwrites from start to finish. The Executive Director manages all the Foundation’s real estate and portfolio investments and monitors all tax and accounting matters.

Columbia Mayor, Daniel Rickenmann, and Columbia City Council have proclaimed March 9th as ‘Susan Boyd Day’ in the City of Columbia! Mayor Rickenmann presented the proclamation to Susan F. Boyd during the Boyd Foundation Horticultural Center ribbon-cutting ceremony.
